Motorcycle & Scooter Licenses
There are two ways to get a motorcycle license. One is to go to Jeonnam Driver’s License Exam Station in Naju. Some staff can speak English. Take the brief physical exam (ophthalmologic test) and the written test in English. It costs 9,000 won. The course test requires three hours of safety education, which is available on site (12,000 won). However, the course test is given at a police station. Course tests are given on Thursdays in the third week of every month at any police station. It costs 10,000 won.
If you go to Jeonbuk Driver’s License Exam Station in Jeonju on Wednesday, you can take all the tests on the same day.
Another way to get a motorcycle license is to go to a police station. You can take both the written test and course test at any police station.
*Please contact the police station for your application three to four weeks (usually the last week of the prior month or the first week of the month) to take the test on the Thursday in the third week of the month. For more information, visit this website: www.dla.go.kr/english/index.jsp (English)

Q: I’d like to by a scooter in Korea. Do I need a driver’s license?
A: You will need to get a drivers license for all vehicles, including your scooter. However, if your scooter is above 125cc then you will need to receive a second normal class license, otherwise known as a motorcycle license.
Q: I would like to buy a motorcycle and have it registered in my name but the current owner is no longer in Korea. We have all the papers associated with the motorcycle and the license plate from the original owner. Is it possible to have the motorcycle registered in my name?
A: Yes. However, the following documents are required.
- Declaration of Use – Certificate of Liability Insurance – The Previous Owner’s Seal Registration – Transfer of Ownership (Must include the previous owner’s seal) – ID – Acquisition Tax of 2% – Registration Tax of 3% (In case of motorcycle over 125CC)
When you are ready with these following documents, all you have to do is bring those to documents to the district office in your area to register the motorcycle under your name.

Hi, I just bought a new Scooter, what do I need to bring in order to register it? Also, how long does it take to get registered? Thank you!
To get license plate, you have to register your scooter to the district office where you live( Dong-gu / Seo-gu…office) Here are the documents needed for your registration:
1. Your seal stamp which is called “인감” in Korean, (signature is not applicable). To make one, you need to have your stamp and inform them of your residence address.
2. Proof of ownership of the vehicle (if you don’t have it, you can bring a friend as witness, Korean or foreigner doesn’t matter). In this case, Your friend also needs to make “ingam” (seal)
3. Insurance certificate (you can apply for insurance in almost any insurance company. For example we tried to call ‘LIG’, their scooter insurance rate is 300,000 won per year. When you apply for insurance, you need to show your original Alien Registration Card and let them know of type of vehicle.)
Please write down the serial number of your scooter as you have to write it down in the application form, or you can bring the scooter with you the Office and they will look for it for you. the license plate price is 3,850 won. Don’t forget that you need to bring a friend as witness too (Korean or foreigner doesn’t matter) and you both should prepare the seal stamp (ingam). You can receive the license plate on the same day.
